These were two that I think have most definitely benefited from the ‘finish’ treatment.
Toxic Bastard
At last, it is time to start getting some finals done! I am very excited to start to ink and tone these guys (even though I still have 15 more to pencil). Granted, these two aren’t the most exciting of the lot, but I wanted to start with some more basic ones to get a good idea of how I was going to approach them all. I have a lot more in various stages of being inked, so lots more finished ones coming up soon!
Smelly Bastard
New illo I just did for the band KNAPSACKHEROES! . This was super fun to do, and uber nice guys to boot. Definitely check out the band’s music , really good stuff. These guys are going places!
A few weeks ago, on my FB Page, I said I would draw Justin Bieber, if I got 200 likes in some amount of a few days. I thought I was safe, I GUESS I WAS NOT.
So, here we go. In the end I was disappointingly nice, nor can I believe I even wasted the 4 hours it took to do this rather shoddy thing. But hey, I do not back out of (even ridiculous) promises!
Don’t get me wrong, seems like a nice kid; but I’d rather get a colostomy than listen to his music…
Well, it’s been awhile since a Bastard update, but things are plugging along to the finish line. I have just started inking the series, and so far I am having a tons of fun (more than I thought I would actually) doing it. And it’s actually going faster than I thought it would as well, so good news!
To inch a little closer to the finish line, here are two more additions.
Klepto Bastard
Heartbroken Bastard
(Mr. Tom Jones said it best really.)
Well, it took me a little longer than I thought, but finished.
For Illustration Rally’s British bands Portrait week.
I am doing another illustration for Illustration Rally’s portrait month. This week is British bands, so I decided to do Mumford and Sons. Despite them no longer officially being ‘indie’, and thus at the risk of no longer being ‘cool’, I still think they are pretty great.
This isn’t going to be a super complicated illo, so I am hoping to finish it tonight, if not make major progress.
I just started a new illustration tonight, and thought I would share a few sketches from the process.
Most important though, is that I will be doing a VERY limited run of prints of this finished illustration, 5 prints to be exact. The first print will be sold through the Art Through Japan auction. The other 4 prints will be sold via Ebay, all proceeds of which will go to the Red Cross’s relief efforts in Japan. All prints will be professionally done giclee, signed and numbered.
The piece is not Japan themed, it’s one I have been wanting to do for awhile (this circus/carny character montage) but this felt like the right time to do it, and the right thing to do.

Check out for the Art For Japan auction once it’s up in April, and consider bidding on something. There are tons of amazing illustrators taking part!
PS – The ringmaster’s resemblance to Christoph Walz’s character in the upcoming film ‘Water For Elephants’ is purely coincidental, I assure you. But I do love him.
PSS – It would be really cool if you bid on this.
Again, another illo for Illustration Rally. And another one that was a long time coming. Been a pretty big Nick Cave (and the Bad Seeds) fan for a good decade now. Cave is one third of the trifecta of singer/songwriters who are a huge inspiration for me creatively; Bob Dylan and Tom Waits being the other two. When I think really think about the true roots of what inspires me, Cave is right up there, so it was very, very fun to do this portrait. I hope the piece accurately portrays Cave’s manic, dark, visceral nature.
I also am planning on posting a step-by-step process post on how I did this illustration in the next few weeks, so keep an eye out for that.
Also, I wanted to give out a shout out to Sergio, who left a really very super nice comment on m blog a few weeks ago. Sergio, if you see this, thank you so much!!
Nick Cave
Oh wow, check this out. This was my portrayal of Nick Cave, about seven years ago. I cannot help but cringe, but I am glad to see some improvement has occurred over the years.
Last week I started up a group sketch blog over at The Insomniac Sketch Society (still looking for people to join up btw if you have the sketch bug!), and I am about a quarter of the way to my 50 pages in 30 days goal now. I wasn’t going to post the sketches here, but I figured, it’s my blog, why not!
I am having a lot of fun doing these, and looking forward to the rest to come.
Stop on by the ISS and see what other people have been up to.

This was done for the very awesome Illustration Rally site, but really, I should never need an excuse to draw Mr. Lynch; who’s movies have disturbed me on a level that no others have managed to. My hat is off to you, Mister Lynch, for giving me adult nightmares. I think if someday I can learn those crazy meditation techniques he uses, I might be able to tap into some dark unknown creative corner of my mind. For now, I’ll just wing it.
I did not have a lot of time to work on this, so I tired to keep things loose. Also, knowing that David Lynch is a fan of industrial warehouses, I tried to give the portrait that kind of feel to it.
Was a blast to do!
I recently discovered a new site called Illustration Rally. They have pretty fantastic themes, and a very short amount of time to pull them off. There is some pretty amazing talent sharing work there. Because I love a theme, and I’m a glutton for punishment, it totally appeals to me.
They are doing portraits this month, and the first week has an option for Nick Cave, as well as David Lynch (who I am also doing), Bjork and Marianne Faithfull; both of which would also be awesome to do, if I can manage it.
I realize I rarely show any work in progress pieces on my blog, so I am trying to get better at that.
Here’s my Nick Cave WIP, the sketch has just been birthed….
And if you are a fellow artist type, and want to get involved, go check out the Rally site!
I have started up a sketch challenge, 50 Sketchbook Pages in 30 Days!

If you are a slinger of pencils, pens and various other marking instruments, come on in and join!
As I near the finish line, I am starting to really make sure those ‘must do’ Bastards happen; this was one of those.
However, I had no idea that Michael C. Hall ever had such historical implications, that or I’m just seeing things from lack of sleep…
I do love a ridiculous 70′s exploitation movie. One of my favorites is “Blood For Dracula”, and it was only a matter of time before some illustration came from it.
With this, I wanted to capture the almost pathetic, waif-like quality that (the very beautiful) Udo Kier’s Dracula had in the film. I also read somewhere that Paul Morrissey tried to film Kier like silent a silent movie actor; something else I wanted to try to capture with this piece.
Probably most notable about this illustration is that I did it entirely in Illustrator, a program that less than a year ago would cause me to go into rage induced fits…merely by opening it. So, one small step for illustrator-kind…..
And I guess this means a “Flesh for Frankenstein” illo is surely due……
I am starting a new personal project, which I call BIZARD. I am still plowing on with 100 Bastards, and everything else, but I wanted to add something a bit different to the mix.
To check out the BIZARD page, click below.
If you don’t want to go to the page, no worries, here are the first two pieces I’ve done for BIZARD.
Puddles

Basking

And here are two sketches that didn’t make the cut, but I thought I’d go ahead and slap some ink on them anyways.
Hope you enjoy the new illos. I am working my buns off on more stuff; stay tuned!
At last, I have opened up the Shop section of my site. To start things off, I have the “Starvation Heights” limited edition print of 100 for sale. This print was done to celebrate the 100 years since the trail of the infamous ‘fasting specialist’ Dr. Linda Burfield Hazzard.
The print is signed and numbered by myself, as well as by the bestselling author of “Starvation Heights”, Gregg Olsen. Which I think is really super cool!
For more information on the print, check out the Shop.
For tons of great information on Linda Burfield Hazzard, check out Gregg’s great website dedicated to the book and the almost too hard to believe true crime story behind it.
And yes, there will be more things being added to the Shop soon. I have plans…..oh yes….plansssss….
