“Love of Portland” show + oh yeah I sort of forgot I had a blog…

So, it’s been quite awhile since I updated the blog section of my site.  But I have been plenty busy.  I’ve been pretty good about keeping my Facebook page up to date with news.  I am going to get back to updating my blog.

First up, this is a piece I just finished for the “Love of Portland” show, opening this Saturday (Feb. 19th) at People’s Gallery, located at Pioneer Place, downtown Portland.  It’s going to be an awesome show, with over 150 artists sharing pieces showing their love for Portland.

This piece was a lot of work, but I think it turned out pretty cool.  I am probably going to be doing a small run (20) of gilcee prints of this.  More info to come soon!

It’s Mad Men week over at the Sketchery.  I wish I’d had more time to do more illustrations for the theme, since MM is one of my all time favorite shows, but I was able to pull this together.  I’d love to do some more Mad Men work in the future.

Villains Week, concluded.

Well, I do have one more that I would like to work on, but for the moment I’m going to leave it be and move on with other things.  To wrap things up:

Villains Week continues with one of my favs, Col. Hans Landa.

It’s Villains Week!

Seeing as it’s ‘Favorite Villains’ week over at the Sketchery and I love, love, love villains, I’ve gone a bit crazy on this one and done a whole bench of ‘em.

I’ll also be posting these every day this week over on my Facebook page.  At the end of the week I’ll be doing a drawing (or more than one) for a free print of your favorite.  So stop on by!

After this, I really need to stop on the portraits for awhile…

Sketchery – Favorite Musicians Week

Oh lordy, I could have done an entire series for this week’s theme over at the Sketchery, sadly, time seems to keep moving, despite my best efforts.  What’s up with that??

‘Starvation Heights’ Centennial Event – prints

On top of the print I am already selling, I have created two new prints for the “Starvation Heights” Centennial, this Saturday in Olalla, Washington.

I will be there selling all 3 limited edition prints, plus some smaller swag.  If you happen to be in the area, stop by my table and say hi!

100 Bastards – Sentient Bastard

#88 here.  Big thanks to Brooke for not only giving me the idea for this one, but for getting me into Harlan Ellison, which this references very obviously one of Ellison’s short stories. (bonus points to anyone who comments with the name of the story; Brooke is exempt however :P )

100 Bastards – Caesar Bastard

It’s been quite awhile since I posted any 100 Bastards stuff, especially new pencils.  I have been a little sidetracked from the project the past few months, but I am back to it, and hoping to finish up the sketches as soon as I can.  I believe this makes #87.

It’s Star Trek theme week over at the Sketchery and I definitely could not pass this one up!

BIZARD – Crone’s Rest

It’s been awhile since I updated BIZARD, so here’s a new one to add to the series.

Mixed Media IV

I am participating in the Mixed Media IV bowling pin fundraiser for PDX Pop Now, hosted by Grand Central Bowling. The event is this Friday, the 24th.

Check out my newly finished bowling pin:

“Red Right Hand” – Russell Edgington

Last week I did this for the True Blood theme week over at the Sketchery. (AMAZING talent over there, please check it out!)

I had a blast doing it; Russell was such a fantastic character (he really made the last season of TB for me), and it’s hard for me to pass up giving a great bastard some illo life. :)

RedBubble Store opened for biz!

I have finally gotten around to creating my own RedBubble Store.  You can now buy posters, prints and cards of many of my illustrations.  I will definitely be adding more things soon!

Illustration Friday – “Shadows”

It’s been awhile since I did an IF, and I told myself if I could throw something together in one evening, I would let myself do one this week.  So here we go.

I love to do random posters/covers/montages of on the fly made up stories and chars that will never actually come to fruition.  It’s good practice. :)

Pen and ink, COPIC maker tone, Photoshop.

Blood Dumpter – “Thicker Than Blood”

Got my copy of Blood Dumpter #1 today (addressed so awesomely to ‘The Dow of Melissa’), and it looks great!  Really fantastic quality, and such an array of cool illo’s to be found in there.  You can pick up a copy here.

Big thanks to Nate and Laura, and the rest of the NYC Art Collective for letting my wee scribbles grace the issue!

Intoducing Sketchcard Saturday’s FB Page Giveaway

I have been wanting to do this for awhile, and I am now ready to get it started. woohoo!

Here is the lowdown.

- Every Saturday, I will make a post on my Facebook fan page, announcing the Sketchcard Saturday giveaway is on.  The time will be random.

- The first SIX people to reply to the post will be entered into the giveaway; numbered in order that they posted (1-6).  I will keep the giveaway open as long as it takes to get six replies.

- I will then roll a Dice Roller on Random.org. This will be completely random, and whichever number comes up on the dice designates the winner. (example: you were the 3rd person to comment, you are #3, 3 comes up on the dice, you win!)

- The winner gets to pick whatever they want as the subject of a sketchcard I will draw for them.* (see stipulations below)

- The sketchcard is a 2.5 x 3.5″ piece of cardstock, the size of a standard trading card.  I will be using 100lb Strathmore Bristol sketchcards. (example)  The artwork will be done primarily in pen and ink and COPIC markers (however various other media may be used as I see fit).  Each sketchcard will be individually stamped, dated and signed on the backside.  Each one will be unique!

- Once I complete it, I will send the sketchard to the winner, free of post.  This includes international addresses.

- Repeat the next Saturday!

STIPULATIONS LIST – Please read!

- You may not win another giveaway until 3 more winners have passed.  Basically, you can win once a month.

-The sketchcard can be of anything you want – HOWEVER – I will not draw pornography, or anything I deem as depicting a message of hate, racism, etc.  In other words, I do reserve the right to ask you to pick a different subject.

- You may be as specific, or as general as you like with your image request.  But keep in mind, the art will be done in my ‘style’; I really prefer not to emulate another artist’s style.   The more general  you are (I want ‘a cow’, as opposed to, I want ‘a purple whistling cow flying through a sky of yellow mushroom clouds’) the more you leave the final image up to my interpretation (which could be a good, or a bad thing XD)  If you really prefer just black and white, or black and white with a tone, that is fine too; please just let me know.

- When picking your image, keep in mind, a sketchcard is a small area to work with (2.5 x 3.5″).  Portraits, small characters and single objects are great choices.

- You must provide me with a mailing address, emailed to me privately.  If you are uncomfortable sharing your mailing address, please provide at least somewhere where I may mail the card to you.  If you do not provide me with a mailing address, the card will sadly remain with me.

- I will do my best to have your card done within a week’s time, but in some cases it may take longer.  Please be patient, I will get it done for you as soon as I can.

- While I will attempt to have the giveaway every week, but there will be some ‘dark’ weeks, where I am either out of town or just too bogged down with other projects, life, etc.

- If you end up not liking the card, I will not do ‘re-do’s', I am sorry.  I will do the best I can to make it something you will like but hey, it’s free anyways!

That’s it!  The first giveaway will be this coming Saturday!

Salt Lake City Weekly cover

My cover illustration for the ‘Salt Lake City’ is out this week!

Here is my original art:

You can check out the final cover with masthead, etc HERE

Huge thanks to SLCW art director Susan Kruithof for the great assignment!

New Illo – Traveling Band

Here is an illustration I did to accompany an album review for the Traveling Band, featured on the great Amelia’s Magazine.

Had a lot of fun on this one.

Another homepage re-design

I definitely have some new stuff to post soon, but in the meantime, I fiddled with my home page again.  Improvement?

The MDI logo is curtsey of Mr. Shane Cawthon/Thrillustrate, a really great designer, and super nice guy.  Shane did this for me out of the blue, and I love it.  I love it so much, it’s going to be getting tattooed on me (in flat black though) in the very near future.  Talk about branding!

Stay tuned for more splattery, grittery, liney illo-ing!

100 Bastards – Minion Bastard

A huge thanks to Brooke for giving me a major creative push in this, the late Bastard hour.  I will no doubt be thanking her more for her round of great suggestions!

This guy has to win the ‘Ugliest Bastard’ award, and yet, I find him strangely adorable.  Then again, my taste in men could be called suspect.  ;)
